The arts to occupy former military precincts …in post post-Soviet times

The Baltic Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts, Kaliningrad, Russia, is currently rebuilding a huge areal of the attic of the ‘Kronprinz’ barracks. That includes also the three level tall ‘Kronprinz’ tower (when the reconstruction is finished even four levels high), which is sympathetically welcoming visitors at the front entrance of this brick complex.
Reaching out for a new, integrative identity, redefining army spaces through arts, and stepping beyond defensive narratives.
A report on how to realise role model guidelines with very limited resources.

Nida Art Colony / Neringa, Lithuania

Colony life, space interferences and island love

Nida Art Colony is beautifully located at the midpoint of the Curonian Spit, on an elongated island, which is a popular holiday resort – the Lagoon towards the Lithuanian mainland on one side, and the Baltic Sea on the other. Europe’s second largest dune can be climbed within a ten-minute walk.
Within the AIR programme, five spacious studios for Artists-in-residence, staying between one to three months, are available. Also groups of 60 persons can be accommodated at once. When the third section of the building complex is finished by autumn 2015, even 75 people can be hosted.
An island-retreat for creatives and thinkers – but much more than that!

As close as possible to where art originates

The ‘Baumwollspinnerei’, erected in 1883, succeeded in what so many places fail: It did not become a brownfield like lots of other urban-industrial locations in Eastern Germany, but a vivid spot within a new branch, letting artistic outcomes and alternative economic attempts flourish.

‘We believe that new art should be talked about, should be read, seen, heard and experienced.’

Appearing like a Venetian water palace in the centre of the medieval old town of Bamberg, Villa Concordia provides all sources of inspiration an artists can long for. Located in the region of Franken (my home area as well), that brought forth and attracted numerous creative and thinking minds throughout all eras. Some name dropping:
The region gave and gives home to the painters Lucas Cranach and Albrecht Dürer, the writers E.T.A. Hoffmann or one of the most successful children’s books authors of contemporary times, Paul Maar (creator of ‘The Sams’), and also world renowned musicians/composers such as Richard Wagner.
